Those hoping to witness a big steel ball of lights drop in Royal Oak on New Year’s Eve, like in 2010, will be disappointed to learn there will not be a repeat this year.
Last year, an estimated 12,000 people gathered in and around Sixth Street and Washington Avenue to watch a free rock concert, enjoy family friendly activities and watch a 1,300-pound lighted ball drop at the stroke of midnight in true New York-style fashion.
The night was such a success that the city gave the event sponsor, Citadel Broadcasting, the nod to come back and do it all again this year, but the company canceled.
“We did approve a special events permit for (New Year’s Eve), but they pulled it,” said Stewart Meek, assistant to the city manager.
Meek said the sponsor has showed no intention of repeating last year’s well-attended event, which seemed to distinguish Royal Oak as not only a capable host for its residents, but also a destination for Metro Detroiters and even out-of-towners.
A call to Citadel for comment had not yet been returned.
Local bars and restaurants were at capacity and Royal Oak Police reported fewer than a dozen arrests on New Year’s Eve.
“We’re happy that 12,000 people came and peacefully had a great time,” Sgt. Al Carter said last year. “I think the night was a big success for Royal Oak.”
Perhaps the happiest demographic served by the outdoor ball drop were families with young children – those who would otherwise would be stuck at home watching TV.
“We were able to bring the kids and they’re having a great time. The music (which included the Gin Blossoms and Detroit natives the Romantics) is great and the arts and crafts are terrific,” said Freda Efros of Royal Oak last year.

Citadel getting ready to ring in 2012
ROYAL OAK — The downtown will be rocking again on New Year’s Eve.
Citadel Broadcasting will host its second-annual night of free concerts culminating in a midnight ball drop on Washington Avenue. Mark your calendar for 6 p.m. Dec. 31.
Last year’s inaugural event headlined by The Romantics brought out about 10,000 people according to one city estimate, said Ron Smerigan, marketing director for WDVD and 93.1 Doug-FM.
“They closed an extra street for us because people spilled out of restaurants just before midnight,” Smerigan said. “It was pretty packed. It was an extremely warm night, too. “
The city approved a special event permit for the 2011 Rockin’ Royal Oak New Year’s Eve party but denied a request that of the organizers fees over $2,500 be waived.
“They will pay all costs associated with the event,” City Manager Donald Johnson said.
With the permit in hand, the radio stations now are looking for sponsors and musical acts.
“It’s going to be similar to last year,” Smerigan said. “The ball is programmable so we might have the lights blinking and flashing in different patterns but it’s going to be the same kind of great family event. It’s alcohol free. Bring the kids and let them stay up late.”
