Managing One’s Email

This page and any other following pages will be devoted to a discussion of “Managing one’s Email”

It will start with some observations and then some suggestions with the hope that people with submit their observations and suggestions by submitting comments. All the following are for the PC. Mac users are invited to participate with their comments on how the same functions are handled on the Mac.

Observed solutions to getting rid of Spam:

  1. Abandoning their email and setting up a new one to avoid the ever increasing influx of spam. The problem with this solution is that some of their family and friends will lose touch. Sending an email to all the people they want to keep in touch with the new address, assuming they do not use some type of group mail, will give the harvesters the new address. Eventually they will have to repeat the process once their volume of email gets too large to digest. The abandoned email addres will still receive mail and the Internet Service Provider(ISP) will eventually cancel the account.
  2. Subscribing to multiple email addresses. Using one to use for family and close friends, another for business and another to give to vendors, and people they want to avoid. This solution requires periodic attention to the two of three mailboxes. The good friends mailbox daily, the secondary box on some other schedule and the third never. This simple plan will work as long as none of your good friends does not use your good email address in a chain letter.
  3. Completely abandoning email and switching over to Facebook or Google+. If one has the time to go through either of the two they probably have time to muddle through their email.
  4. Using Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Express to filter their Email. If one purchased a laptop or desktop PC with either of these two programs, using them to filter email is a good solution. Even if you are using Prodigy, AOL, Yahoo, Juno, Comcast, Wowway or any other ISP, One can use Outlook or Outlook Express to manage email. If one did not get eithe of these programs they can purchase them from Microsoft or down Something like Thunderbird from Mozilla to set up filters.
These programs provide the following functions:
    • Based upon from field and/or the subject field, emails can be deleted without presentation. This will happen before you see them
    • Based on the same fields, emails can be directed to folders or boxes that the user establishes. These boxes can then be viewed and processed on a different schedule. Boxes or Folders can be designated like
      • Family
      • Friends
      • A special Friend
      • Club
      • Business

The folders or boxes will be legible in the left column and the number of unread emails in each box will appear. This solution does take some setting up that is not very intuitive.
