Friends of Belle Isle are looking for a few volunteers for their Nashua Bridge Project.

Hello Everyone,

The Nashua Creek Bridge needs repairing. And while Joe Poma is heading up the repairs, we need volunteers to help.

The following is a little information about what will be taking place.

The bridge project involves only a few materials. It includes planking, fasteners, tools and a generator. I plan on having the generator and the materials delivered to the parking lot at the corner of Loiter and Vista Way at 10am, Saturday, August 21st. I will need anywhere between 3-8 volunteers to carry the materials from the parking lot to the base of the bridge (which is a short walk down the forest path). I could also use some help in tearing up the old planking with a crow bar or similar device, measuring the replacement planking, operation of a miter saw or circular saw, drilling pilot holes in the new planking and installation. The reason why so few volunteers are needed is because I would rather pull one plank off at a time, just in case we hit a snag, and also so we have a reference point for the placement of the new plank. Only one or two people can operate the power tools at a time anyway. Specifically, the project will proceed as follows, if all goes well:

1) Materials will be delivered to the parking lot at Loiter & Vista.

2) Materials will be carried to construction site at base of bridge

3) Generator and tools will be set up and ready to go.

4) First old plank will be removed.

5) The old plank will be placed next to a new plank and a scribe placed on it for length. We will also measure the distance from the end of each new plank to where the bolt holes will be.

6) A drill bit intended to create a “counter-sink” hole will be drilled into top end of the plank to make the top of the bolt flush with the plank when inserted. Another drill bit will then drill through the plank.

7) The new plank will be put into place on the bridge and fastened with a socket set, wrench, etc.

The next old plank will come off and when the next new plank is installed, there will be spacers between the new planks to make it uniform.

9) We will continue this procedure all the way across the bridge.

Possible glitches include any rotted underlying wood (runners), a difficult time removing the old planks and the need to resort to another method for removal, and then, there is always the possibility of materials shortages at Home Depot (although I think we are o.k.).

Please send me back your name, phone number and e-mail address where you want to be reached.

If this is something that you would be interested in assisting with, please contact me ASAP.

Thanks

Tene’

This past weekend I attended three events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All three of the events were in the Peggy Jo Newsletter. On thursday it was the [club name deleted by blog administrator] Meet and Greet. There a good number of people there and they all seemed friendly but they were not too interested in meeting any new people.

On Friday I attended a [Club name deleted by blog administrator] Happy Hour. there were only a few people there and I pretended that I was not even looking for them. I heard from the grapevine that they used to have a very large following.

On Saturday I attended a very large gathering at a hall on Big Beaver. The [Club name deleted by blog administrator] had a lot of friendly people at the door and they explained the mixer procedure and one of them accompanied me to the table to pick up a key. There were a lot of things going on and I felt like I was at a wedding reception without a Bride or Groom.

I wonder how three events could be so different.
