Happy Chanukah

Chanukkah Menorah

History
The Hebrew word Chanukah means "dedication." In the 2nd century BCE, during the time of the Second Holy Temple, the Syrian-Greek regime of Antiochus sought to pull Jews away from Judaism, with the hopes of assimilating them into Greek culture. Antiochus outlawed Jewish observance
-- including circumcision, Shabbat, and Torah study under penalty of death. As well, many Jews -- called Hellenists -- began to assimilate into Greek culture, taking on Greek name s and marrying non-Jews. This began to decay the foundation of Jewish life and practice.

When the Greeks challenged the Jews to sacrifice a pig to a  Greek god, a few courageous Jews took to the hills of Judea  in open revolt against this threat to Jewish life. Led by Matitiyahu,  and later his son Judah the Maccabee, this small band of pious ews led guerrilla warfare against the Syrian-Greek army. Antiochus sent thousands of well-armed troops to crush the rebellion, but after three years the Maccabees beat incredible odds and miraculously succeeded in driving the foreigners from their land. The victory was on the scale of Israel defeating the combined super-powers of today.

Jewish fighters entered Jerusalem and found the Holy Temple  in shambles and desecrated with idols. The Maccabees cleansed  the Temple and re-dedicated it on the 25th of Kislev. When it came time to re-light the Menorah, they searched the entire Temple, but found only one jar of pure oil bearing the seal of the High Priest. The group of believers lit the Menorah anyway and were rewarded with a miracle: That small jar of oil burned for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be brought.
From then on, Jews have observed a holiday for eight days, in honor of this historic victory and the miracle of the oil. To publicize the Chanukah miracle, Jews add the special Hallel praises to the Shacharit service, and light a menorah during the eight nights of Chanukah.

Latkes

Latkes (Potato Pancakes)
Prep Time: 12 minutes
Cook Time: 18 to 24 minutes
Chill Time: none
Yield: 8 servings

4 medium Idaho potatoes
6 tablespoons canola oil or olive oil
3 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons matzoh meal
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
Applesauce or sour cream (optional)
1. Prepare a large bowl filled with cold water
2. Peel potatoes, and as you finish each, place in cold water to prevent browning.
3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
4. Cut potatoes lengthwise into halves or quarters so they fit into food processor feed tube. Process potatoes using the blade that creates thin, shoestring-like strips and transfer to a large bowl.
5. Add eggs, matzoh meal, salt and pepper and mix well.
6. Drop 6 to 8 spoonfuls of mixture into hot oil. Using the back of a spoon, pat down each latke to flatten it. Put as many as you can in the skillet without crowding. Putting them too close together will make them soggy.
7. Fry 3 to 4 minutes on each side, until golden and crisp around the edges; repeat procedure until finished with all the batter.
8. Blot excess oil with paper towels.
9. Serve warm with applesauce or sour cream, if desired.
Tip:
Corn meal is a great substitute for matzoh meal and will also make your latkes nice and crispy.

Sweet-Potato Latkes

Ingredients

1 lb sweet potatoes, peeled and coarsely grated
2 scallions, finely chopped
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
3/4 cup vegetable oil

preparation

Stir together potatoes, scallions, flour, eggs, salt, and pepper.

Heat oil in a deep 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4, spoon 1/8 cup potato mixture per latke into oil and flatten to 3-inch diameter with a slotted spatula. Reduce heat to moderate and cook until golden, about 1 1/2 minutes on each side. Transfer latkes with spatula to paper towels to drain.

Kirk Singles Starts the Giving Season

A single mother with three children under 7 years of age was facing a the prospects of a very sad Christmas but Kirk Singles conducted a very "Glitzy" Pary at the home of Jay. Glover. About 45 people attended and they collected over $1,100.00 to help the family.

They plan to purchase toys and clothing for the children and clothes, Gift cards from Wal-Mart, Target and Kroger for the mother.

This is the fourth year this club, with the help of the Salvation Army, has selected a family to help.

Men's Health (second of a series of ten )

By David Schipper, Men's Health

Your weight-loss strategy should be inspired. Will power alone won't shrink your waist==;you need facts and wisdom on your side if you're going to maintain the resolve you showed in January.
There are scientists who study weight loss so the rest of us can keep track of the important stuff, like spring training and Rotisserie drafts. These researchers regularly come up with good advice, the latest and greatest of which we've gathered for you. Pick a few tips, put them in your lineup, and get back in the weight-loss game.
2. TURN OFF THE TV
Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York recently determined that simply seeing food can trigger a physiological "feed me" response. In the study, visual food cues caused brain activity to jump by 24 percent—mostly in the orbitofrontal cortex, the area of the brain related to drive and acquisition. So a constant barrage of pizza-delivery ads on TV could test your limits. And don't get us started on the Food Network.

It's a wonderful life

The Redford Theater is a restored old time movie house. Not to be confused with updated. It still has the ticket booth outside, concession stands inside, and one of the few remaining pipe organs in existence. The pipe organ alone make it worth it to show up early. Not to mention the opportunity of getting a good seat. Even the seating is of the original layout, which is very spacious seating as opposed to the "crowd in as many as you can" seating in today's theaters.

It is owned and operated by the Motor City Organ Society - a non-profit group. These days, their mission is to continue theater restoration for the purpose of presenting old classic films on the big screen just as they were meant to be seen.

It is a truly unique venue, unlike anything else to be found.

"Its A Wonderful Life" on Saturday, December 15. Admission is only $4.00. Afterward, we can head out somewhere for a bite and a brew.

More information about the Redford Theater can be found here: http://redfordtheatre.com/
