Skuratowicz Repeats as "Skipper of the Year"

Once again Richard Skuratowicz was selected as the "Skipper of the Year" by the Sailing Singles club. In the photo with Richard are on the left, Ren Bryant, Special Events Chairman andon the left, Lynn King Commodore of Sailing Singles. Skippers DinnerThe presentation was made at the Sailing Singles annual Skippers Dinner At Gino's Surf on Saturday October 6. The event is held to honor all of the skippers that offered their boats for use by Sailing Singles members during the rendezvous and other sailing events in the past summer. The "Skipper of the Year" is selected based upon a participation scoring system.

Richard was also co-chairman , along with Brian Briggs, of the Sailing Singles Flying Scot Program and plans to fill the same role next summer.

Columbus Day and Canadian Thaksgiving

Monday marks the annual celebration of Christopher Columbus's landing in the New World which took place on October 12, but is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Although other non-idigenous people probably arrived on this contonent before Columbus, it was his publicizing of the event that led to the population movement to the New World.

It is also Canadian Thanksgiving day which gives our neighbors a day to reflect on their blessings.

Obituary of the late Mr. Common Sense

 

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has
been with us for many years.  No one knows for sure how old he was, since
his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.  He will be
remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in
 charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place.  Reports of a 6 -year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher f ired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
 children.  It declined even further when schools were required to get
parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a
student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and
wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better
treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot.  She spilled a little in her
lap, an d was promptly awarded a huge settlement.  Common Sense was preceded
in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his
daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To
Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.  If you
still remember him, pass this on.  If not, join the majority and do
 nothing.

Dear Peggy Jo,

I am a faithful reader of your newsletter and I know that from time to time you take up some causes. I wonder how many of your readers have noticed a new sign I spotted at a popular Royal Oak restaurant.

The valet parking company has a sign that says " Valet Parking $5.00" which is not unreasonable, given the lack of adequate parking in downtown Royal Oak, and I have used this service in the past. They do collect up front so I never paid anything when leaving.

Recently, another smaller sign is displayed stating that the "attendants work for gratuities only". If this is true then I believe the valet parking company is exploiting the attendants Who gets the $5.00? . If the claim is false then I believe the attendants are exploiting the the patrons.

Sailing Singles has been dedicated to bringing single people together for the enjoyment of sailing, cruising, social and educational experiences for 27 years. Our membership numbers over 200 single people who love sailing, boating, social activities and meeting new people.

Single people over 35 who love the water, own a boat (power or sail), enjoy boating or who would like to try it out, should come by our meetings the second Friday of every month (except December) at the Troy Elks Club, 1451 East Big Beaver between John R and Rochester Road on the North side of the road.

Meeting doors open at 7:30, program at 8, music and dancing at 9. Come early to meet the Club that welcomes all newcomers. Our average meeting attendance is over 100 single people from all over South East Michigan. Hear about upcoming events, sign up for activities. Newcomers and guests door fee $8 (member fee $5) join Sailing Singles at the meeting get $3 refund. Memberships are still available at $45 a year and are prorated if you join after August. There is one time $10 initiation fee.

At 9 the D.J. starts the music on the big dance floor. We have Ladies choice and line dances through the night so there are lots of opportunities to get up and dance. Or, you can join others at a table and talk to new friends. The Elks have a cash bar, in the meetings it is smoke free. Business casual dress is fine.
