Last Home Game of the Season

The Detroit Tigers played their last home game of the seaon on Sunday September 28 and Charley Marcuse the Singing Hotdog man finished his 10th season at the Ballpark. In the pj and charleymorning prior to the game Charley appeared on Fox 2's Cooking School to present his recipe for a Salmon Salad using his own "Charley's Ballpark Mustard".

Rosh Hashanah Starts at Sundown

Rosh Hashanah Origin

The origin of Rosh Hashanah is Biblical (Lev. 23:23-25): "a sacred occasion commemorated with loud blasts (of the Shofar, the ram's horn)." The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar).

In Talmudic times, Rosh Hashanah became a celebration of the anniversary of the world's creation and a day of self-examination, repentance and judgment. While the day was called Yom HaZikaron (Day of Remembrance) and Yom HaDin (Judgment Day), the name Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year) which was first used in the Mishna - written recording of the Oral Torah -  has become the most prevalent.

How is Rosh Hashanah celebrated?

On Rosh Hashanah, Jews listen to the shofar blown during lengthy prayer services, eat holiday meals, and do no work. After repenting for bad deeds through prayers, they symbolically cast off sins through the tashlich ceremony.

Rosh Hashanah is both a solemn and a happy day. It is a time for introspection, asking for forgiveness, giving forgiveness, resolving to do better, remembering God is King and Judge, and praying for a healthy and happy year to come. Those observing the Jewish New Year are solemn in their repentance, but happy in their confidence that God is merciful and good.

Rosh Hashanah in a Nutshell

Ten Most Important Things to Know about Rosh Hashanah are:

  1. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.
  2. Rosh Hashanah is a Day of Judgement.
  3. Selichot prayers asking for forgiveness are recited during Elul and on Rosh Hashanah.
  4. Rosh Hashanah liturgy focuses on God as King.
  5. Jews are commanded to hear the shofar on Rosh Hashanah.
  6. The shofar blasts remind us that God is King.
  7. A festive meal, with symbolic food, is eaten on Rosh Hashanah.
  8. Shana Tova is a popular Rosh Hashanah greeting.
  9. Tashlich is the symbolic casting off of sins on Rosh Hashanah.
  10. Ten Days of Repentance begin on Rosh Hashanah and end on Yom Kippur.

George from the Farmer's MarketBryan is now famous because he is appearing in the "Got Mustard Campaign" .Bryan is part of the management team at Westborn Market on Woodward in Royal Oak. If you see him be sure to tell him you've seen him in the "Got Mustard" campaign. You can see the other 500 plus people by clicking on the underlined words above.

There are over 520 people who have volunteered to participate and we have found it necessary to change the way the slide show runs so that people can browse rather than wait to see their photo with the "digital mustard" on their upper lip. One can replace the phrase in the section box with their first name adn deleting any othe text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.

Walk for ALS

Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in the United States. Known as the "death sentence" this disease has no known cause or cure. Michigan is said to have the second highest rate of incident for ALS in the entire country. The ALS Association, Michigan Chapter has been helping people with ALS (PA LS) in Michigan for 30 years and is ready to find a cure and needs your help! The Walk will start at the Belle Isle Park Casino at 10 a.m. and continue for 3 miles around the island. Registration and check-in will be at 9 a.m. Mason the voice of the Detroit Pistons will be there lending his support to this cause as will hundreds of patients, families and friends.

Money raised at this event will go to support local patient service programs and to local and national ALS research. Walk Because You Can!
