crawford Armstrong Day in the Sun
SAT 2010-06-26 As if all the usual reasons weren?t enough to make you root for sunshine Saturday, consider the Detroit Yacht Club?s annual boat ride, picnic and dance.
The CAHA, as it?s known, is not for the members. Heck, they?re out on the water or dancing in the bar all the time. The guests of honor at the Crawford-Armstrong Handicapped Association event are more than 800 group home residents, and most of them only get one shot at a boat ride all year.
The CAHA started with one DYC member and a handicapped friend in 1974. The late Bud Armstrong decided that if Clair Crawford got a huge kick out of the day, others with physical or mental challenges probably would, too.
This time around, it will take nearly 200 volunteers ? and cooperative weather ? to provide smooth sailing for the CAHA. Technically, by the way, it?s smooth power-boating, since motorized vessels tend to have wider and more enclosed decks than sailboats.
Fog kept everyone on dry land last year, although DYC membership director Rosemary Tokatlian of Grosse Pointe Park says the guests had a big time anyway. One of them was her brother, Michael Tokatlian, who has cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, mental and emotional impairments and ? in case that list didn?t make life difficult enough ? is legally blind.
Michael, 31, lives in a group home in Livonia. "He gets up every day at the same time," says Rosemary, 33. "He eats at the same time every day. He goes to his program at the same time every day."
The trip to the boat club on Belle Isle is something fresh and exotic. Skip Gmeiner, a former DYC commodore, says he was on the water with a hearing-impaired boy one year, "and he kept signing the word ?happy? the entire trip."
If that doesn?t make you pull for blue skies, you?re living under a dark cloud.
From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM..Location: Detroit Yacht Club. Detroit (Belle Isle), MI 48207 (313) 824-1200 web http://www.dyc.com
