Greetings!
Back to the future
We have made many changes to the format of
this newsletter over the past six years and
much of the production has been automated.
However we have had to revert back to a more
primative version due to server problems at
our hosting providers installation. We should
be back with our expanded format next week.
Views of Fathers
4 years: My Daddy can do anything!
7 years: My Dad knows a lot---a whole lot .
8 years: My father does not know quite
everything.
12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not
know that either
14 years: Oh, Father? He is hopelessly
old-fashioned.
21 years: Oh, that man-he is out of date!
25 years: He knows a little bit about it, but
not much.
30 years: I must find out what Dad thinks
about it.
35 years: Before we decide, we will get Dad's
idea first.
50 years: What would Dad have thought about
that?
60 years: My Dad knew literally everything!
65 years: I wish I could talk it over with
Dad once more.
Your father is now a senior citizen,
Father's Day is on the horizon and you need
to find a gift for dad.
By Eleanor
Strickland
These are a few suggestions:
Don't give him ties, shirts, pants,
robes, coats, jackets, suits, belts, hats,
pajamas, slippers or shoes. Sure, his clothes
may be worn and out-of-style but he likes
them. As a senior, your dad will probably
just put them in the back of a chest or
closet and never find it again.
Don't give him fragrances, shaving
supplies, grooming kits. As a senior, your
father already looks and smells as good as it
gets.
Don't give him tools. As a senior, your
dad has more tools than he will ever need or
use.
DO mow his grass, clean
his garage, wash his car and take it in for
servicing, clean his gutters, change his
ceiling light bulbs, and do any other chore
that your father seems to be neglecting. As a
senior, your dad may feel pressured to do
these chores even though he doesn't have the
energy.
DO cook him a healthy
home-cooked meal on Father's Day and at
least once a week or once a month. As a
senior, your dad (if living alone) may be
cutting corners in buying groceries or
cooking.
DO take him to a
baseball game or go golfing, fishing or
bowling with him. As a senior, your dad may
have lost the friends with whom he once
enjoyed these sports.
DO take him to a movie
or rent a DVD of his choice, buy popcorn,
and candy and enjoy the afternoon or evening
laughing, crying, or screaming together. As
a senior, your dad may just want to sit back
and relax.
DO schedule his annual
doctor's appointment. As a senior, your dad
may be reluctant to see a doctor no matter
how great his pain or misery.
DO ask him to make three
wishes: things that he would like you to do
for him or give to him. As a senior, your dad
may not be accustomed to asking favors but,
at this age, this could be a good exercise
in learning to ask for help when he needs it.
DO check on him every
day ... not just on Father's Day. Call or
come by and make sure he is not ill or
injured, that he is taking his medications
and that he is not lonely or depressed. As a
senior, your dad needs your attention. If
you cannot do it personally, consider
employing a professional service to do this
for you. On Father's Day, tell your
dad you love him and show your love ... not
with material things, but with your time and
assistance.
This Week's Now Famous Person
Commodore Bill Miller is now famous for
appearing in the "Got
Mustard Campaign" He is also famous for
being the new commodore of the Jefferson
Yacht club
So when you see or contact Commodore
Miller, be sure to tell him you saw him in
the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter. You can see
the other hundreds of people by clicking on
the underlined words above.
You can browse rather than wait to see a
particular photo with the "digital mustard"
on the upper lip. One can replace the phrase
in the section box with a first name and
deleting any other text in the box. Then only
the slides that contain that name are
displayed.
If you had your photo taken and can't
find it in the slide show please send us an
email. If you would like to send a photo to
be included, send it to
webmaster@peggyjostudio.com. We will supply
the "digital mustard".
Congratulations Commodore Miller!!

Emails from our readers
Hi Peggy Jo,
I'm responding to the letter written by R.L.
about feeling isolated at group functions
because of everyone sitting at one table
rather than having individual tables.
I can understand the feeling, but I'll bet
that if there were individual tables, R.L.
would not be the one table hopping. Instead
R.L. believes 'other people' will table hop
and thus come over to meet him/her.
The best thing a host/hostess can do is to
have an event at a place where the group can
stand and mingle for an hour or so before
sitting down to dinner. Once people start
sitting down, it's all over. It doesn't
matter if there's one big table or ten
individual tables.
Standing and mingling makes it happen. And
that means current members (who already have
a comfort level) being hospitable and going
over to new people to introduce themselves,
and in turn introduce others to the new
person. But it also means people who are
coming in to a new situation need to 'put
themselves out there' just a tiny bit. It
only takes a few seconds to put your hand out
and say "Hi, I'm new." NO ONE will turn away
from you. They will smile and say Hi right
back. If that feels awkward, ask to see the
organizer of the event..they'll make sure you
meet a few others right off the bat.
It takes a lot of time and energy to put on
an event. But it's well worth it in the end.
And it's one of the best ways to meet more
people in the club. If anyone feels
isolation, maybe they need to take ownership
of that isolation. I was new once too and I
felt funny for a few minutes the first
evening. But once I knew a few people it got
easier and easier. So in the instance R.L.
mentioned, she/he met at least 3-4 people at
a function who were sitting on both sides and
across from her/him, so at the next event
R.L. will add 3-4 more new friends, and it
grows from there.
By the way, THANK your hosts and hostesses
and officers. They do a lot for you and get
paid nothing. It's totally a volunteer job.
Try it out sometime...host an event! You
might love it. And you'll get to meet
everyone who's attending your event.
Thanks,
A concerned Host.
