"WHY THE AMERICAN FLAG IS FOLDED 13 TIMES"
Have you ever wondered why the Flag of the United
States of America is folded 13 times when it is
lowered or when it is folded and handed to the
next of kin at the burial of a veteran?
Here is the meaning of each of those folds and what it means:
The first fold of our Flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the
veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of
their lives for the defense of our
country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as
American citizens trusting, it is to Him we turn in
times of peace as well as in time of war for His
divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the
words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing
with other countries may she always be right; but it
is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is
with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America, and to the
Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for
it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our
country and our flag against all her enemies, whether
they be found within or without the boundaries of our
Republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered
into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might
see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it
flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has
been through their faith, their love, loyalty and
devotion that the character of the men and women who
have made this country great has been molded.
The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he,
too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense
of our country since they were first born.
The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen
represents the lower portion of the seal of King David
and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God
of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen,
represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in
their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
When the Flag is completely folded, the stars are
uppermost reminding us of our Nation's motto, "In God
We Trust." After the Flag is completely folded and
tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat,
ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under
General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines
who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were
followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed
Forces of the United States, preserving for us the
rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.
The next time you see a Flag ceremony honoring someone
that has served our country, either in the Armed
Forces or in our civilian services such as the Police
Force or Fire Department, keep in mind all the
important reasons behind each and every movement.
They have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us by
honoring our Flag and our Country.

Flag Day honors Old Glory

Flag Day ,held June 14 each year, commemorates the day the Second Continental Congress authorized the United States of America to adopt a flag to represent the new nation. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14, 1916, to be a national celebration of the American flag, and the 1949 Congress declared June 14 to be national Flag Day every year.
Flag Day is an opportunity "for everybody to show their patriotism and that we are unified behind a common goal, represented in a physical sense through the U.S. flag, [and] recognize freedom," said Tech. Sgt. Branden Issitt, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Little Rock Air Force Base honor guard.
The United States has a specific code for how Old Glory should be treated.
Issitt said most people generally follow much of the U.S. Flag Code without knowing it, but some people display the flag where it touches bushes or other things beneath it. "It should be able to flow freely with the wind,
so it doesn't get snagged or torn," Issitt said.
Guidelines of the U.S. Flag Code include:
Display the flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. The flag may be displayed 24 hours per day if properly illuminated during at night.
Hoist the flag briskly and lower ceremoniously.
Do not display the flag on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is used.
When flown at half-staff, hoisted the flag to the peak for an instant and then lower it to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
Do not allow the flag to touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, floor, water or merchandise.
Destroy the flag in a dignified way, preferably by burning , once it is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display.
The Maumelle Veterans Memorial Committee takes pride in making sure Old Glory is displayed in a dignified fashion.
For example, the committee conducts a flag retirement ceremony twice a year. Participants in the ceremony include members of the committee, the Maumelle Fire Department and community residents. The committee follows the mandates of the U.S. Flag Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, which states in part, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

MSDA Monthly Dance Michigan Swing Dance Association
SUN 2010-06-20 Every month, the MSDA holds a kick-ass dance, usually on the third Sunday. Our dance is held at the gorgeous Rhythm -n- Shoes Ballroom Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills. There are lessons at 3 PM and a dance party from 4 to 8 PM. The music is California Mix with East and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Ballroom, Latin and Country and our DJ, Phil Dorroll, takes requests. We throw in a Speed Dating Dance and a Newcomer Mixer just to change things up a bit. A light meal is served, as well as snacks, soft drinks and cake, plus we give away door prizes to people whose tickets are drawn.
For members, the dance is $9 and the lesson is free. For non-members, the lesson is $4 and the dance is $11. If you join the club at the dance, you save $6.

The MSDA dances are attended by couple and singles alike. For the most part, our members are single and we are always happy to see new members join. The MSDA is like a big, friendly family and we are very comfortable asking each other to dance. In other words, men ask women and women ask men. That?s our format. Cancer Research Golf Benefit PWP St. Clair Shores
SAT 2010-08-07 This is a fundraiser where all proceeds will go to the U. of M. Comprehensive Cancer Research Center.
There will be a special contest at one of the holes; where you have the chance to will $50,000 dollars in cash. There will also be multiple prizes at 3 other par 3 holes. Golfers are needed.
