Memorial Day in United States
Memorial Day commemorates all Americans, who have died in military service for the United States.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.
It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor everyone, who has died, and those, who have died in military service, in particular. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis' Birthday in Mississippi. Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year.
Public life
Memorial Day is a federal holiday. All non-essential Government offices are closed, as are schools, businesses and other organizations. Most public transit systems do not run on their regular schedule. Many people see Memorial Day weekend as an opportunity to go on a short vacation or visit family or friends. This can cause some congestion on highways and at airports.
Background
Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.

Dear Peggy Jo
Please forward this to your readers
Want to have fun, meet lots of new people/dancers, contribute to the success of Michigan's signature national swing dance event and become an ambassador of good will representing Michigan Dancers? I knew you couldn't resist!
With only two weeks to go to the Classic, we are organizing our volunteer schedule. It takes a lot of wonderful people to make this weekend happen, including (I hope) you!
Here are the types of positions available:
Airport Pickup:
What an opportunity! You get to talk with all sorts of top dance Pros including the one and only Beata Howe, our head judge! Or you might get to know Christopher Hussey or the Auclairs or the top DJ on the circuit, Victor Loveira! Thursday and Friday pickups don't conflict with any activities so you won't miss anything. Same for Sunday evening drop-offs.
Set up/Tear down:
We always have a good crew and have lots of fun, especially with the tear down. I have some of my favorite photos from tear down parties. Who IS that under the piano???
Registration Desk:
(You REALLY meet lots of very cool dancers AND Pros from everywhere including St. Louis, Florida, Canada, and Cleveland.
VSJ:
Very Special Job: Beata Howe's assistant. Beata is the head judge and will handle all the competitions. She needs someone resourceful with a cool head and a self-starter attitude. Is that you?
Competition Coordinator:
This person gets to meet all the competitors and helps them line up and go out on the floor at the right time. Very important job as it helps keep everything on schedule.
Hospitality Host/Hostess:
Man the hospitality room for an hour at a time and hob nob with the staff and Pros.
Doorworker:
Greet people at the ballroom door and check their wristbands. They get to know your face this way and will probably ask you to dance later on.
Raffle Tickets:
We need a really friendly, persuasive person who loves to 'work a room' and meet literally everyone in the place. Big smiles preferred.
Would you like to volunteer for any of these jobs? Please let me know ASAP. It will be a blast!
