National Day of Prayer
Thursday, May 1, 2008
Shain Park Birmingham, Michigan 48009
In the past few issues we have provided you information about the history of National Day of Prayer and also that it is sponsored by the Congress of the United States, the President of the United States, and the Governor of Michigan.
What happens at our event in Shain Park? First, it should be noted that we have been conducting this observance for over five years and have been blessed with good weather. The format is as follows: We gather about 11:45 AM, introduce ourselves to each other, and place red white and blue NDP balloons around the park to let people know where we are assembling. (When we are done, the balloons are given to the many children playing on the swings and slides.) Each year there are new people, but don’t be surprised if you see many familiar faces. At noon we form a circle and someone is designated to read the national prayer. Then each of is given the opportunity to speak or not. Ordinarily, people pray for our country, our leaders, our communities, etc. We can say a prayer or just give our thoughts in regard to the event.
It is a short observance lifting up our nation and your participation is important. If you can't make it, think of us at noon and maybe read the national prayer that follows. Feel free to tell your friends and also remember that all are invited regardless of religious affiliation.
Shain Park is located in downtown Birmingham across from the Community Center and is abounded by Merrill, Bates, Henrietta and Martin Streets. If you need any other information please send an email to peggyjo@peggyjostudio.com. Get a map here
2008 Prayer for Our Nation
Dr. Ravi Zacharias
2008 Honorary Chairman, National Day of Prayer Task Force
Holy Father, in a world where so many are hungry,
You have given us food in abundance;
In a world where so many are hurting,
You offer to bind up our wounds;
In a world where so many are lonely,
You offer friendship to every heart;
In a world longing for peace,
You offer hope.
Yet, we are so stubborn and resistant.
Have mercy upon us, Lord.
Our nation is at a crossroads this year;
we look to you to be our strength and shield.
Please give us the guidance to elect one who will honor you
and to respond to the wisdom from above
so that our hope may be renewed and our blessings be treasured.
In God's holy name.
Yom Hashoah
Holocaust Remembrance Day
This year Holocaust Remembrance Day is Friday May 2, 2008. The Holocaust Museum has designated "Do Not Stand Silent: Remembering Kristallnacht 1938" as the focus for the 2008 observance.. It is set aside to remember those that suffered, those that fought and those who died. Six million Jews were murdered. Many fanilies were completely decimated.
"
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged
because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him,
for there is a greater power with us than with him." 2 Chronicles 32:7

Inforum- A Professional Women's Alliance
FRI 2008-05-09 The U.S. health care system needs some fundamental fixes. What are they and what will it cost in $$$$$ and care depending on the different solutions proposed by presidential candidates.
This noted panel of health care experts will address the realities of the economics of providing quality care at an affordable price.
46th Annual Meeting
The program will feature a panel of experts discussing the future of the United States health care system -- problems, fundamental fixes needed, and what the different solutions proposed by presidential candidates could cost in terms of dollars and quality of care. One model to be reviewed is actuarial insurance, which could impact everyone differently based on individual's health.
Cathy Tripp, Watson Wyatt Worldwide, National Leader of Consumerism, will discuss key findings in a recent survey on the costs and benefits of consumer-directed health care plans.
Nick Barr, Ph.D, Professor of Public Economics, London School of Economics, will discuss the premise that there is no perfect system of healthcare; the model of actuarial insurance and its unsuitability for many medical risks; and how it is no accident that the U.S. system is in a mess and indicates strategic solutions.
Nancy Schlichting, CEO Henry Ford Health System, will talk about the quality equation and how the actuarial insurance model impacts health care delivery.
Kate Kohn-Parrott, Group Director from Chrysler Corporation, will address the business perspective of what the actuarial insurance model does to the economics of running a business and paying salaries that people can actually live on.
This will be followed up with an open discussion about alternative health care models and what areas within the U.S. system could be improved.
Inforum's 2008-08 board of directors and officers also will be inducted at this annual meeting.
