Olga is also famous for becoming an American citizen this Month. She did live in Troy but now resides in Saginaw. She says that she enjoys the quiet of Saginaw but misses the activities in Troy.
So when you see or contact Olga be sure to tell her you saw her in the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter. You can see the other hundreds of people by clicking on the underlined words above.
You can browse rather than wait to see a particular photo with the "digital mustard" on the upper lip. Just replace the phrase in the section box with a first name and delete any other text in the box. Then only the slides that contain that name are displayed.
If you had your photo taken and can't find it in the slide show please send us an email. If you would like to send a photo to be included, send it to webmaster@peggyjostudio.com. We will supply the "digital mustard".
Congratulations Olga !!
Tommy Saunders passes Away
At Publication Time, We did not have the funeral arrangements. We will place them in the blog which can be found at www.peggyjostudio.com/wordpress
Cornetist Tom Saunders (b. Detroit 1938) has been the leading figure of Detroit?s dixieland (or "traditional jazz") scene for forty years. In 1962, after playing jazz around Detroit on a part time basis, and having returned from a three-year stint in the US Navy, Saunders quit his job to go on tour with Pee Wee Hunt. Tom has been playing full time ever since. He remains one of the few performers, anywhere, to continue to play authentic Dixieland jazz successfully as a full time performer.
In the 1960?s Tom Saunders? Surf Side Six became one of Detroit?s most popular bands?initially at the Surfside Lounge on East Jefferson, then later at the Dearborn Towne House and finally for a 12 year run at the Presidential Inn, playing six nights a week with a six piece band. During this period Tom took periodic time out to travel, performing on occasions with such greats as Eddie Condon, Ralph Sutton, Bobby Hackett, Arvell Shaw, Herb Hall, Claude Hokins, Peanuts Hucko and others.

This is still getting many people to click each week so we are keeping it in. Let us know if you think it is worthwhile.
In the next 2 weeks, Detroiter's will be well represented at the Olympics in the figure skating events, starting off with the men's event. Transplanted from Colorado US figure skating men's champion Jeremy Abbott , moved to the Detroit area to work with Yuka Sato (Japan's world champion and Olympic competitor) , Jeremy trains out of the Detroit Skating Club.
Abbott is considered to be one of the front runners. He skated a near perfect program at the US Nationals in Jan to beat World Champion Evan Lyascek. Jeremy and Evan will be skating in the deepest men's skating event ever held. There are 10 skaters who could possibly win the gold. 3 of the men are past world gold medalist and 1 an Olympic gold medalist. Watch for the Quad jump. That would be what will separate the winners.
Other skaters to watch is Johnny Weir (USA), Evgeni PLUSHENKO (Russia), Brian Joubert of France, Stephane LAMBIEL (Swiss), Patrick Chan (Canada),Nobunari Oda and Daisuke Takahashi from Japan.
This year will be the second time the Olympics will use the Code Of points (CoP). Skaters get points for jumps. skating skills, presentation and skate moves between jumps called transitions. The judges rate techinical, skating skills and presentation on a 10 point scale. Skating skills and jumps are identified by a technical specialist. Then the judges give a grade of execution (GOE) from -1-+3. Spins and footwork are also graded levels Level 1 -4. 4 being the best. All the elements such as jumps have point totals.
Even if the skater falls, he can still get credit for the rotation of the jump. If a skater goes for a quad and he under rotates it, he would only get credit for a triple and negative GOE. If a skater takes off from the wrong edge of jump they can get down graded for that. NBC will have a page called "You be the judge" where you can rate the skaters.

Presidents Day
Presidents' Day is the common name for the United States federal holiday officially designated as Washington's Birthday. It is celebrated on the third Monday of February.
As the official title of the federal holiday, Washington's Birthday was originally implemented by the federal government in 1880 in the District of Columbia and expanded in 1885 to include all federal offices. As the first federal holiday to honor an American-born citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. In 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February.
In the late 1980s, with a push from advertisers, the term President's Day began its public appearance. The theme has expanded the focus of the holiday to honor another February President, Abraham Lincoln, and often other Presidents of the United States as well. Although Lincoln's birthday, February 12, was never a federal holiday, approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington's Birthday observances as "Presidents' Day", "Washington and Lincoln Day", or other such designations. It is also interesting to note that "Presidents' Day" is not always an all-inclusive term. In Massachusetts, while their state holiday honors "Washington's Birthday", there is also a Presidents' Day Proclamation honoring the Presidents that have come from the New England area. Alabama uniquely observes the day as "Washington and Jefferson Day," even though Jefferson's birthday was in April.
In Washington's home state of Virginia the holiday is legally known as "George Washington Day."
Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year has a great history. In our past, people lived in an agricultural society and worked all year long. They only took a break after the harvest and before the planting of seeds. This happens to coincide with the beginning of the lunar New Year.
The Chinese New Year is very similar to the Western one, rich in traditions, folklores and rituals. It has been said that it is a combination of the Western Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. This is hardly an exaggeration!
The origin of the Chinese New Year itself is centuries old - in fact, too old to actually be traced. It is popularly recognized as the Spring Festival and celebrations last 15 days.
